The safe and efficient operation of the global merchant fleet cannot be ensured in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals without simultaneously reducing its negative environmental impact. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted and is working on measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships, and also taking steps in the international shipping, marine fuel production, and bunkering sectors. How effectively are ships using the eco-friendly (alternative) fuels that are being promoted in Russia today? How prepared are Russian fuel and energy companies to produce and ensure the use of eco-friendly (alternative) marine fuels? How prepared are ports and bunkering companies to conduct bunkering operations with this fuel? How affordable and accessible will fuel be for decarbonizing shipping, given the growing demand for it from other modes of transport? How will the transition to new fuels affect shipping costs and the price of goods for end consumers? How is the IMO initiative to reduce the negative environmental impact of maritime transport being implemented? What successful international practices are we seeing today?
